There has been no step-free access at New Wimbledon Theatre for months, so our Access Champions held a peaceful protest outside the theatre, before the performance of 'War Horse' on 8 August 2025. Our message was simple: enough is enough; fix the lift!
The theatre's handling of the situation has been frustrating, to say the least. They ignored not only our letter last December, but also a subsequent enquiry via their website, and an attempt to contact them via social media. Hence, we felt that we had no choice but to take direct action.
We were very disappointed that no one from the theatre came out to speak to us. By contrast, numerous theatre goers and passers-by took the time to express their empathy and support, and to ask us if there was anything that they could do to help. However, we are pleased to announce that the theatre emailed us a few days later, asking to meet. They have also shared that a new lift will be installed, with work beginning at the end of September. They expect it to be fully operational by mid-to-late October.
